Robert Johnson is an American Award-winning Weather Forecaster working at ABC 11 News serving as a Meteorologist since he joined the station in February 2020. Formerly, Johnson worked at Campus Weather Service as a Forecaster and Broadcaster.
Robert Johnson Education
Johnson earned a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology and Atmospheric Science from Penn State University, specializing in communication and weather forecasting, and minored in Energy Business & Finance as well.
Johnson was a highly involved student at Penn State, he was the weather anchor for the university’s Emmy-winning student program; the Centre County Report. The Broadcast Education Association named Robert the “Best Student TV Weathercaster” in the country for his meticulous coverage of the 2017 storm season.
Additionally, he served as Vice President of the Campus Weather Service at Penn State Meteorology, the nation’s oldest and biggest student-run forecasting organization. While in this role, Robert oversaw the club’s extensive social media presence and acted as the executive producer for CWS’s live broadcast coverage of significant storms.
Furthermore, he cohosted the PBS public affairs show “Digging Deeper” for two years with Penn State President Dr. Eric Barron as a student host. He assisted WPSU in winning a Mid-Atlantic EMMY for Overall Station Excellence while serving in this capacity. He finished his internships at the FOX-owned Philadelphia station WTXF-TV and the ABC-owned powerhouse WPVI-TV, which is also ABC11 WTVD’s sister station.
However, broadcasting 46 LIVE, the official live stream for the Penn State Dance MaraTHON, was one of his most memorable experiences. THON, the world’s largest student-run charity, dedicates itself to offering financial and emotional assistance to kids and families affected by pediatric cancer.
Over 16,000 student volunteers put in a whole year of work, and it all comes together in a 46-hour dancing marathon that forbids sitting and sleeping. Robert is committed to continuing his community involvement. Now, he serves as the Triangle Chapter’s Communications Chair for the Penn State Alumni Association.

He is currently performing his duty as a meteorologist for the ABC 11 Eyewitness News since he secured a position at the network in February 2020. His predictions air on ABC11 Eyewitness News Monday through Wednesday at 4 pm, and on the weekend evening shows. Our powerful sister station in Philadelphia, 6abc Action News, captivated him in particular. A PBS Kids commercial highlighted his love of broadcasting while he was in the fourth grade.
The American Meteorological Society awarded him the esteemed Certified Broadcast Meteorologist credential in January 2023. According to the AMS website, earning an accredited meteorology degree is the only way a meteorologist can achieve the highest seal.
