Don Schwenneker Biography
Don Schwenneker is an American Award-winning Journalist working at ABC 11 News serving as a Meteorologist since he became part of the network in January 2011. Formerly, he worked at WBBM-TV as a Meteorologist.
Don Schwenneker Career/Education
Don studied at the Mississippi State University where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Meteorology. He is currently time working at ABC 11 Eyewitness News playing his role as a Chief Meteorologist since he joined the station in January of 2011. In addition to a Seal of Approval from the National Weather Association, Don is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist from the American Meteorological Society.
He came to Eyewitness News from WBBM-TV in Chicago, where he worked as a meteorologist. Don had previously worked for WTAJ-TV in Altoona, Pennsylvania, and WTAE-TV in Pittsburgh. He started working as a main weather forecaster for Roswell, New Mexico’s KBIM-TV more than 20 years ago.
Regarding his nickname, “Big Weather,” a coworker gave it to Don for two reasons. To start with, he’s one of the taller meteorologists on TV at 6’5″. Second, Don was constantly on TV during major weather alerts, such as tornado and flood warnings. Thus, “Big Weather” was on TV anytime severe weather was predicted. And ever since then, the moniker has remained!
He also served as a volunteer firefighter in Pennsylvania for seven years. Don is a first responder and licensed rescue technician. Don’s public service involves not just battling fires but also dispatching police, fire, and emergency medical services. He is also nationally certified as a 911 call taker/dispatcher. Don serves as ABC11’s in-house culinary guru. Every Friday, he performs a flavor-based skit in his Big Recipe segment.
