Ben Cathey Biography
Ben Cathey is an American Meteorologist serving at WVLT as a full-time Meteorologist and Climate Reporter. He joined the Station in January 2019 after working as a Meteorologist for WTVG.

Cathey earned his High School Diploma at Wake Forest-Rolesville High School in 2007. He then joined the University of Miami, earning his Bachelor of Science in Communication, Meteorology and Broadcast Journalism, and Math in 2011. In 2009, he interned at WTVDABC11 Eyewitness News for less than a year. Also in 2010, he interned at WFOR-TV CBS4 for less than a year.
Cathey began his broadcasting career in June 2011, working as a Meteorologist at KWES-TV in Midland, TX until October 2011. He then left and worked for KELO-TV in Sioux Falls, South Dakota Area as a Meteorologist from October 2011 to December 2013.
In January 2013, he worked for WTVG in Toledo, Ohio Area as a meteorologist for six years and one month. Cathey currently serves as a full-time Meteorologist and Climate Reporter at WVLT in Knoxville, Tennessee Area. Here, he forecasts on the weekday evening news at 5, 6, 10, and 11 p.m. What he likes most about Tennessee is hiking.
Cathey has won the recipient Emmy Award four times. The Associated Press named him “Best Weather Anchor” in Tennessee in 2020. The AMS and the National Weather Association seal also awarded him the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist seal the two highest certifications in the field.
He once visited the Everglades where he questioned the Dalai Lama and President Clinton. He also rescued baby ducks from a storm drain, using pipe cleaners and a colander. In his spare time, he likes to cook, travel, read, hike, personalize science and climate reporting, explore all the new things sprouting up around town, and cheer on the Big Orange.
