Shannon O’Donnell is an American journalist serving at KOMO TV as a chief meteorologist. She joined the station in February 2009, after working as a broadcast meteorologist for King 5 Television and NWCN.

From her early fascination with weather in elementary school, Shannon’s passion for all things atmospheric blossomed. Growing up on the Sammamish Plateau, she pursued her interest through her education, graduating from Redmond High School and later earning a B.S. in Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Washington in 1998. Her dedication was further demonstrated by achieving the American Meteorological Society’s Seal of Approval that same year.
During her university years, O’Donnell began her career as an intern weather producer at KOMO-TV 4 in Seattle. Concurrently, she worked as a research meteorologist at the University of Washington under the renowned Professor Robert A. Houze, Jr. Her responsibilities included flying aboard P-3 aircraft over the Pacific Ocean to collect data aimed at enhancing storm forecasting in the northwest region. Additionally, she assisted in launching radiosondes, or weather balloons, from NOAA research vessels. Transitioning into professional roles, Shannon worked as a meteorologist at NWCN, KING5-TV, and later NBC11 KNTV. Furthermore, she also served as a broadcast meteorologist for King 5 Television. Subsequently, she held the same position at NWCN.
Shannon transitioned to KOMO TV and KOMO Newsradio in February 2009. Currently, she still serves as a broadcast meteorologist, continuing her dedication to weather reporting. Concurrently, she also resumed her research pursuits as a research meteorologist at the University of Washington from January 2015 to date, maintaining her commitment to advancing atmospheric science.
Moreover, now back in the department, O’Donnell is involved in various research initiatives, such as the Olympex field campaign, focused on refining precipitation measurements from the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) satellites over the Olympic Peninsula. In 2019, she took on the role of developing and teaching a ‘Media & Meteorology’ class aimed at guiding aspiring forecasters in effectively communicating weather and scientific information through ‘The UW Dawgcast’.
