Amanda Holly Career/Education
Holly studied mechanical engineering at the University of Florida (Go Gators, Chomp Chomp!), where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree. She also graduated from UF with a certificate in meteorology and climatology. Amanda worked as an intern for a Boeing contractor as a junior, but her interest in meteorology was really sparked by her elective studies.
She continued on to Mississippi State University to pursue her Master of Science in Applied Meteorology. Amanda spent ten days chasing tornadoes across the Great Plains as part of a field course during that period. She witnessed three tornadoes develop, land, and then pass. The most remarkable one was the EF-2, which was half a mile wide and passed only eight-tenths of a mile ahead of her.
“While the science behind tornado formation is fascinating, the power of tornadoes is terrifying,” Amanda stated. “Seeing the tornadoes on the ground was unforgettable,” she added. “Watching the storms develop and mature was amazing enough.” Holly will be able to utilize the course and its significant skills to forecast for the rest of her career.
Amanda is presently playing her role as a meteorologist at the WFLA News network since she became part of it in June 2019. She will be on WFLA and WTTA in the mornings throughout the week, in addition to the Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday 11 am shows. Amanda is certified as an AMS-certified broadcast meteorologist. She endured the horrific and inspirational storm seasons of 2004 and 2005 while growing up in Florida. As she grew older, this stoked her curiosity about monitoring the weather and discovering how it operated.
