Pete Yanity Biography
Pete Yanity is an American journalist serving at WSPA as the sports director. He joined the Station in October 1990 after working as a sports director for 7NEWS’ sister station, WBTW TV-13.
Pete Yanity Career | Education
Yanity enrolled at Ohio University in 1981 and graduated in 1985 with a Bachelor’s in broadcast journalism. He works at WSPA/7NEWS as a Sports Director and weeknight sports anchor. Additionally, Yanity produces and co-hosts Clemson’s football and basketball TV coaches’ shows. He also does several TV play-by assignments for various entities, including Clemson University, the ACC, the Southern Conference television network, and some of its member schools.
Most of his important work appears on ESPN3 or ESPN Plus. Still, he also does games that have aired on NEXSTAR’s Network of stations, CBS Sports Network, the Fox Sports (now Bally) Regional channels, SportsChannel New York, the ACC/Raycom Network, and The American Sports Network. In 1986, he was a sports director/weeknight sports anchor for two other network affiliates. He served as the halftime host on a TV network and Carolina Panthers sideline reporter from 2001 to 2013.
Yanity was introduced as an Honorary Letterman in the Spartanburg school’s Athletic Hall Of Fame in 2002. Since the start of the 2015 school year through the spring season of 2021, he would have called roughly 250 televised events in 10 sports. He worked as a sports director in Florence, S.C., from March 1987 to October 1990 at 7NEWS’ sister station, WBTW TV-13. While working for WBTW, Yanity worked for WBOY-TV in Clarksburg, W.Va as the sports director.
Currently, he is a TV And Radio Play-By-Play Free Lance since May 2000. He also works at WSPA-TV as a Sports Director/Weeknight Sports Anchor. Yanity has produced many specials and he hosts and produces 7NEWS’ popular High School Red Zone each fall, a program that airs on both WSPA-TV and The CW62. He has been working for the team for more than 35 years reporting sports.
He is among the annual emcees for the March Of Dimes March For Babies event at 7 News. Yanity also served as spokesman for 7 News’ One for the Community campaign. Moreover, he has filed reports for Raycom Sports’ ACC Football Pregame show. Throughout his career, he has covered The Masters and Daytona 500, the World Series, major college sports and high school sports, and the Super Bowl.

The South Carolina Broadcasters Association named him a Master Broadcaster, a lifetime achievement award in 2012. Additionally, he has won the Associated Press in the Television/Best Sportscast category, the South Carolina Sportscaster of the Year which was awarded to him by The National Association of Sportswriters and Sportscasters, the 1998 James “Slick” Moore Award for Community Athletic Involvement, and the South Carolina Football Coaches Association which he earned for distinction in covering high school football in the state.
