Dennis Owens Biography
Dennis Owens is an American Emmy Award-Winning Anchor and Reporter working as a News Anchor at ABC27 (WHTM) in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He has been part of the station since May 1993 and has enjoyed his stay there. He started as a Weekend Sports Anchor under Sports Director Gregg Mace and later got promoted to News Anchor a position he holds to this day.
Education | Career
Owens attended and graduated from LaSalle University in 1984 with a Bachelor’s Degree in communications. He then joined WHTM in May 1993 and has been working there ever since. He currently serves as a news anchor. Owens began working at the station as a weekend sports anchor at WHTM under Sports Director, Gregg Mace.
In that position, Owens reported on Super Bowls, World Series, Bowl Games, NASCAR races, baseball’s Spring Training, and Penn State football. He was part of the team that created the Friday Night Football, a show that celebrated its 25th year in 2021. Friday Night Football continues to showcase High School athletes, cheerleaders, and bands that make Friday nights special across Central Pennsylvania.
In 1999, he switched to news and co-anchored Live at Five. In this position, he did it all from jumping out of airplanes, attending the local fair, to learning to make Easter eggs. Further, he answered the call to the anchor desk. First with Valerie Pritchett at 7 p.m. and then Alicia Richards at 6 p.m.
Owens is a familiar face at the State Capitol and one of the most respected television reporters in the area. His state government reports appear daily on Nexstar-owned stations across the commonwealth. Further, he is the host and co-producer of This Week in Pennsylvania.
Dennis’s work over the years has not gone unrecognized and he has been nominated for more than 70 Regional Emmy Awards, winning 15, including Best Anchor in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Additionally, he has won the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award for his reporting on the influence of lobbyists in Harrisburg.
