Bickford enrolled at the University of Oklahoma, graduating with Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in meteorology. He developed an interest in the weather when he was still at a tender age when he heard the sound of a tornado siren. Bickford became more interested during college when he studied at the National Severe Storms Laboratory and worked as a storm chaser for KOCO-TV in Oklahoma City for two spring seasons.
While completing his studies, he worked in Lawton, OK/Wichita Falls, TX at KSWO-TV for a year and a half as the weekend meteorologist. Furthermore, he was the captain of the University of Oklahoma water polo team for two years. Bickford graduated in December of 1993 and joined KOAM-TV in Joplin, MO/Pittsburg, KS as the chief meteorologist.
He worked at KOAM-TV for seven years engaging in severe weather education, the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Project Impact campaign to mitigate severe weather losses and was an associate of a local emergency management group.
Bickford leisure activities included working at KXDG-FM in Joplin as a radio personality for four years. He has also been in other stations like WYCW 62 (Spartanburg, SC), WGHP-TV (High Point, NC), WTHI-TV (Terre Haute, IN), Daily Hampshire Gazette, and WNCT-TV (Greenville, NC).
He currently works at WSPA/7NEWS as a Saturday and Sunday meteorologist. Also, he hosts the Carolina Blends and Brews segment which airs on 7NEWS at 11 p.m. Being a member of the American Meteorological Society, he earned the “Certified Broadcast Meteorologist” designation. Bickford served as the Committee on the Society’s Board of Broadcast Meteorology for a term and won the president of the Society’s Upstate Chapter three times.
