William McGurn Biography
William McGurn is an American Political writer working at FOX News serving as a Columnist and Writer for the “Main Street” column every Tuesday. Formerly, McGurn worked for former President George W Bush as a Chief Speechwriter.
William McGurn Career | Education
McGurn graduated with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the University of Notre Dame in 1981. He proceeded on to Boston University to acquire a master’s degree in communications. He started his career as the managing editor at the American Spectator. In 1989, he moved to the National Review, where he served as the Washington Bureau Chief until 1992. Following that, from 1992 to 1998, McGurn held the position of senior editor at the Far Eastern Economic Review. Later, he became the chief editorial writer for The Wall Street Journal. After joining the White House in February 2005 as a speechwriter, he eventually became the Chief Speechwriter for President George W. Bush in 2006.
By February 2008, he had left to become a visiting fellow at Hillsdale College. In early 2009, he joined News Corporation, which had acquired The Wall Street Journal in August 2007, as the speechwriter for News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch. Then, in December 2012, he assumed the role of editorial page editor at the New York Post. He returned to The Wall Street Journal in April 2015 and now authors the Main Street column while also holding an executive position at its parent company.
On January 23, 2023, just two days after the 2023 Monterey Park shooting, McGurn published an op-ed titled “Are There ‘Too Many Asians’?” in the Wall Street Journal opinion section. This choice of title sparked public outrage due to perceived insensitivity and racism. In response, the article was later renamed “China and the Population Bomb That Wasn’t.”. Despite the backlash to the title, the article actually criticized the long-term Western policies and perspectives that played a role in shaping the Chinese “one child” policy. It concluded by lamenting that the recognition of the harms of such a policy came too late, nearly 50 years after its implementation.
