McDowell received a degree in art history from Wake Forest University. She then started her career at the Institutional Investor’s Newsletter Division serving as a financial journalist. She is currently performing her duties at the FOX News station since she secured a position at the network in 2003. When FOX Business Network debuted in 2007, she was one of the channel’s original anchors. Dagen presently co-hosts The Bottom Line, a new nightly show on FBN, with Sean Duffy, and which debuted on January 23, 2023.

Before coming to work for FOX News Media, McDowell contributed a personal finance piece titled “Dear Dagen” to TheStreet.com. She began her career as a financial writer for SmartMoney magazine and Institutional Investor.
In December 2022 Fox Business named McDowell co-host of a new show called The Bottom Line alongside Sean Duffy.
