William J. Bennett Biography

Bennett William John is an American conservative politician and political commentator serving at Fox News as a contributor, he joined the Station in January 2018 after working as a Secretary of Education for the US government.

Bennett attended Gonzaga College High School before joining Williams College, where he graduated. He earned a Ph.D. in political philosophy from the University of Texas at Austin in 1970 and obtained a J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1971.

Career

William began his career early, serving as an associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts at Boston University from 1971 to 1972. Following that, he worked as an assistant professor of philosophy and as an assistant to John Silber, the college’s president, from 1972 to 1976. In May 1979, he became the director of the National Humanities Center after the passing of its founder, Charles Frankel.

In 1981, President Reagan appointed Bennett as chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), a position he held until becoming Secretary of Education in 1985. During his time at NEH, he published “To Reclaim a Legacy: A Report on the Humanities in Higher Education,” evaluating humanities education at the undergraduate level.

In May 1986, William switched from the Democratic to the Republican Party. He then resigned as Secretary of Education in September 1988 to join the law firm of Dunnels, Duvall, Bennett, and Porter. He returned to the federal government in March 1989 as the first Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy under President George H. W. Bush, leaving in December 1990.

In April 2004, Bennett began hosting “Morning in America,” a nationally syndicated radio program produced by Salem Communications. He retired from full-time radio in March 2016. He briefly hosted a CNN weekly talk show in 2008 and remained a CNN contributor until his dismissal in 2013. Since January 2018, Bennett has moderated “The Wise Guys,” a Sunday night show on Fox News and Fox Nation.

William is a prolific writer, contributing to National Review Online, National Review, and Commentary, and serving as a former senior editor of National Review. He holds positions such as being a member of the National Security Advisory Council of the Center for Security Policy (CSP) and co-director of Empower America. Additionally, he is a Distinguished Fellow in Cultural Policy Studies at The Heritage Foundation. Additionally, he was the Washington Fellow of the Claremont Institute and a commentator for CNN until 2013.

Bennett is an advisor to Project Lead The Way and Beanstalk Innovation and sits on the advisory boards of Udacity, Inc., Viridis Learning, Inc., Vocefy, Inc., and Webtab, Inc. In 2017, he launched a podcast, The Bill Bennett Show.
