Melanie Lawson Career | Education
Lawson studied at Lyman High School from 1990 to 1994. She later enrolled at Hampton University from 1994 to 1998 and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcast Journalism with a concentration in Communication and Media Studies. Melanie is presently performing her duties at News4Jax station serving as a news anchor and reporter since she secured a position at the network in September 2005.
Melanie Lawson has lived in Florida before. Living only two hours south of Jacksonville, she grew up in Longwood. Lawson started working as a journalist at WBOC-TV in Salisbury, Maryland, and Dover, Delaware. She covered a variety of topics for WBOC, including the Delaware legislature, Dover Air Force Base, and in-depth health reports.
Melanie left to work as the station’s noon and 7 pm. news anchor and health reporter after covering stories in Delaware. She created, co-produced, and hosted a half-hour health special for which she was honored with an Associated Press award. It concentrated on three fatal illnesses that plagued the local population.
Among her many community involvements was hosting the half-hour health special. In addition to being a member of Big Brothers Big Sisters, she has mentored kids in her neighborhood, held several public service events, and taken part in community theater. Melanie always takes pleasure in giving back to her neighborhood and imparting the skills she has learned from her profession in broadcast journalism. She has instructed college students in broadcast writing and journalism.
