Mark Collins Biography
Mark Collins is an American Weatherman working at News4Jax serving as a Meteorologist since he joined the station in September 2016. Formerly, Collins worked at the Florida Institute of Oceanography as a Public Education Officer.
Mark Collins Career | Education
Collins graduated from Florida State University with a bachelor’s degree in science. There, as well as at Mississippi State University, he studied meteorology, which equipped him for the unstable convective weather pattern of Jacksonville. Highlights of his career include flying on NOAA’s hurricane hunters and becoming Jacksonville’s first AMS Certified Broadcast Meteorologist.
Mark is presently performing his duties at News4Jax, serving as a meteorologist since he secured a position at the network in September 2016. After working in marine research at the Florida Institute of Oceanography, he joined The Weather Authority. He even deployed some of the buoys in the Gulf that his weather reports use to gather meteorological data.
Collins worked at WTSP in Tampa for four years prior to beginning his research. Although Mark began covering Jacksonville storms on-air in 2003, he joined WJXT in 2010. In his television career, he has covered every region of the state. He arrived in Jacksonville in time to cover the historic storm seasons of 2004 and 2005. Prior to that, he was employed at WTVJ in Miami as an anchor for weather and at WFOR in Miami as the weather forecast center, working in Hurricane Alley. Collins created the weather program for Florida’s News Channel, a statewide cable network that launched in Tallahassee in the late 1990s.
During his early years, Mark enjoyed boating, surfing, and being outside. His active activities generally depended on the weather. He remarked that people are most skilled at tasks that are appealing, so it was natural for them to make a career out of meteorology. His love of weather is a result of his numerous experiences with extreme weather. Mark’s interest in weather was sparked by Hurricane Elena in 1985 and the Storm of the Century in 1993.
Collins recalled the three days spent in a shelter as Elena churned 60 miles offshore. They mentioned coming back to a damaged home on the Gulf. Having weathered some of Florida’s worst hurricanes, they asserted that they had a perspective on storms without being overly sensational.
