Tom Wills Biography
Tom Wills is an American Award-winning Journalist working at News4jax serving as an Anchor since he joined the station in 1975. Formerly, Wills worked at WTOP radio and WTOP-TV in Washington as a Reporter.
Tom Wills Career/Education
Wills studied at the American University where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Journalism. He is currently performing his duties at News4Jax serving as an Anchor since he became part of the network in 1975. He has spent more than 40 years co-anchoring Jacksonville’s top-rated evening newscasts.
Tom worked as a reporter for WTOP radio and WTOP-TV in Washington before moving to Jacksonville. He covered rioting following the Martin Luther King Jr. killing, Bobby Kennedy’s funeral, the Pentagon Papers Supreme Court hearing, the Watergate break-in, and President Richard Nixon’s resignation while he was there. In addition, he was a part-time news reporting lecturer at American University.
Tom has had the honor of speaking with and meeting every president since Jimmy Carter after relocating to WJXT. The closest I ever got to a president in my eleven years of living and working in the nation’s capital was the day I was tasked with guarding the White House theater during the 1967 Six-Day War in case President Lyndon B. Johnson chose to visit to make a statement. No, Tom remarked.
Tom claims that having a career that gives fresh experiences every day is his favorite aspect of it. He shares two Columbia Dupont prizes for documentary reporting and has won two Florida Emmys for his dedication and hard work.
Wills, like many other broadcast journalists, has experienced some things he would prefer to forget. One incident occurred while he was hosting the weekend news and was completely covered in bright yellow.
He said that he hadn’t thought it was embarrassing at the time, but looking back, it had been.
Mayor Alvin Brown visited the station on the 12th of May 2015, to declare it Tom Wills Day in Jacksonville as part of a one-hour prime-time special honoring him for his 40 years with WJXT. Tom enjoys a wide range of extracurricular activities. His favorite film is the Academy Award-winning “Dances With Wolves,” and his favorite book is Emmett Fox’s “Sermon on the Mount.” In addition, he loves sports a lot. He likes to watch all college hoops, the Florida Gators football team, the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the Steelers.
