Ever since visiting a TV station at 15, Denton dreamed of his program. In October 1980, he sent a winter forecast to WPTF, a Raleigh TV station. Despite their policy, they made an exception for Van after his accurate prediction of the first snow on December 27, 1980, which opened doors for his TV career.

Recognizing his own experience’s impact, Van established Van’s Weather Kids in 1996 after Frank Deal’s retirement. Utilizing contacts gathered from 1990 to 1996, he launched the program by reaching out to young individuals and attracting numerous eager participants. Additionally, the program earned two Emmy Award nominations.

Denton’s career inspiration stems from two mentors. Initially, he interned under the late Skip Waters at WCTI in New Bern, which marked his entry into TV meteorology. Remarkably, even at 17 and still in high school, he filled in for Skip when necessary. Later, Van also cherished valuable industry insights from Frank Deal, maintaining a close relationship until Frank’s passing in 2010.

At WGHP TV, Denton anchored the weather, starting with the 11 p.m. slot and later expanding to the 5 p.m. slot since 19. Additionally, for six years, he collaborated with Frank Deal for weather at 5:30 p.m., showcasing WGHP’s stability with only two chief meteorologists since 1969.
