James Wieland’s Career | Education
Wieland graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology at Florida State University. He began his broadcasting profession at WDTV in Clarksburg, WV as a chief meteorologist. Here, he also learned how to get himself out when trapped in snow.
After working in Virginia, he went on to Macon, Georgia to report multiple severe thunderstorms and even managed to chase Hurricane Floyd up the Georgia coast. Here, he earned the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval.
Wieland then developed more tropical experience in Florence/Myrtle Beach, SC by reporting several storms for three years. A poll in the local newspaper, The Morning News named him “Best of the Pee Dee” runner up by a poll.”
He left and worked in Baltimore, MD as a meteorologist, forecasting for three different stations every night. Here, he reported tornadoes, heat waves all in one night, snow storms, and Hurricanes Dennis and Charlie live as they made landfall.
Wieland now forecasts weather at WPTV in West Palm Beach, FL, and is thrilled to be back home. When he’s not forecasting, he loves going to the beach to surf, playing golf, hiking, and exploring. He is part of the Surfrider Foundation and has started the area’s first surf blog by a meteorologist.
