McNeill earned his high school diploma and later attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1979 to 1983. This is where he obtained an AB degree in Radio, TV, and Motion Pictures. While he was still at the University, he held a position as a Student Intern/Part-Time reporter anchor at WKFT-TV in Fayetteville, NC, from 1982 to 1983.
