Cake enrolled at The University of Alabama in 1989 and later graduated with a Journalism and Political Science degree. She began her career at WPTV, NewsChannel 5 – NBC in 1996 as an anchor and investigative reporter. That same year, she left WPTV and joined E.W. Scripps Company and worked as an anchor and investigative reporter.
In 2007, she joined WEWS-NewsChannel 5 as a producer. Other stations she has worked for include: working for WUAL-FM Tuscaloosa, AL as an anchor and reporter, for Alabama Radio Network as an anchor and producer, and WMBB Panama City, FL as a Morning and Midday Anchor and Producer.
She has won many awards including A Regional Edward R. Murrow, 15 Regional Emmy Awards, and dozens of Associated Press Awards. Other awards include NATAS Emmy Awards (Suncoast Chapter): 2003, 2004 (nominee), 2005, 2006, 5-time Emmy Award winner in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 (nominee), 2013 (nominated), 2014—3 awards, and two press awards including Florida Associated Press and Alabama Associated Press.
Furthermore, she earned the RTNDA Regional 2008 Edward R. Murrow Award/News Documentary, PJ Regional Green Eyeshade Award- 2007 finalist, MADD Media Awards 2004, and SPJ Florida Chapter. Her career has altered policies in guardrail protection along Florida’s busiest roadways, revealed government waste when it comes to Medicare spending, and pushed local legislation that has influenced restaurant cleanliness.
