Barbara Gibbs Biography
Barbara Gibbs is an American Emmy Award-winning Journalist working at ABC 11 News serving as an anchor since she joined the station in 2001. Formerly, Gibbs worked at WTVQ as a morning anchor and reporter.
Barbara Gibbs Career/Education
Barbara went to Auburn University, just like all the members of her family. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism Public Relations with a Sociology minor after graduation. She is currently playing her role as a morning anchor since she became part of the network in 2001. Alongside Eyewitness News Anchor John Clark and ABC11 Meteorologist Kweilyn Murphy, she co-anchors the morning and 10 am newscasts.
Gibbs has covered a wide range of news, but her passion is sharing tales that highlight the human spirit’s capacity for good. She received an Emmy for outstanding feature story in 2008 from the Nashville Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for her story “Homeless Singers,” which followed three homeless guys in Raleigh who wanted to become gospel singers. In addition, Barbara was nominated for an Emmy in “Barbara Gibbs’ Little Valentine,” a second feature that told the tale of a little boy in Spring Lake, North Carolina, who won her over on Valentine’s Day.
One of Barbara’s most poignant memories is seeing “Good Morning America’s” Robin Roberts in New York City alongside a Durham breast cancer survivor. She also got to know a family that lived the epiphany: a young mother with cystic fibrosis who underwent a double lung transplant and lived. She also had the privilege of sharing the account of a soldier who served in Iraq; a triple amputee soldier and his wife were given a free home built by local veterans in the homebuilding sector. Barbara worked as a reporter and anchor in the mornings at WTVQ in Lexington, Kentucky, before moving to Raleigh. She later co-anchored the 6 pm and 11 pm shows on WSLS-TV in Roanoke, Virginia.

Gibbs takes pride in her involvement in the community. She and other gifted young local golfers participate in the annual “Jimmy V Jr Celebrity Golf Classic,” which raises funds for research on pediatric cancer.
